小說原英文書名"On the Beach"， 卻翻譯成引用詩句裡面的 "This is the way the world ends"，"世界就是這樣結束的"。 是大膽且引人入勝的書名，也反映小說內容。但一方面似乎也犧牲了原書名On the Beach的多重義? 像書本封底有提到， "「on the beach」為海軍術語，意指卸任退休"，以及書中對照各種已毀壞/遠看起來仍然正常/近看完全破滅/最後有人類活動的海灘。
